Introduction
Many UFO reports begin with a single moving light crossing the night sky. It appears silent, steady and oddly purposeful, leading observers to wonder whether they have seen something unusual. In practice, one of the most useful identification skills is learning the difference between a satellite pass and an aircraft.
A visible satellite and a distant aircraft can both appear as small points of light. However, they are illuminated in different ways and move for different reasons. Those differences create reliable clues. The timing of the sighting, the presence or absence of flashing lights, the way the object fades, and its motion across the sky can often distinguish a satellite from an aircraft within a few seconds of observation. A satellite is usually seen because it is reflecting sunlight. It does not produce visible navigation lighting for observers on the ground. An aircraft, by contrast, carries anti-collision lights and navigation lights specifically designed to be seen.
The simplest test is often the most effective:
- Steady light with no flashing pattern: often a satellite.
- Regular flashes, strobes, or red and green lights: usually an aircraft.
- Smooth, uninterrupted motion across a large section of sky: often a satellite.

Timing is one of the strongest indicators because visible satellites depend on a specific lighting geometry.
To be visible, the observer must be in darkness while the satellite remains high enough above Earth to still receive sunlight. This situation occurs most commonly shortly after sunset and shortly before sunrise. - A bright, steady light seen within roughly an hour or two after sunset or before sunrise is a strong satellite candidate.

Sudden disappearance

Some satellites slowly dim as the reflection angle changes. Flashing and navigation lights
Commercial and private aircraft carry anti-collision strobes and navigation lights. At night these usually produce a repeating flash pattern and may reveal red and green lights on opposite sides of the aircraft. Changes in apparent direction
A satellite’s path is governed by its orbit and appears smooth to the naked eye. A quick field test for UFO sightings
When confronted with an unexplained moving light, a useful sequence is:
- Look for flashing, strobing, red or green lights.
- Note whether the motion is perfectly smooth or involves turns.
- Check whether the sighting occurred shortly after sunset or before sunrise.
- Watch for gradual fading or sudden disappearance.
- Compare the sighting with satellite-tracking predictions if available.
If the object is a steady, silent point of light moving smoothly across the sky during twilight and then fading away without any navigation lights, the evidence strongly favours a satellite pass.
